Pinion gearing system

Pinion's gearing system was developed by two German technicians, Michael Schmitz and Christoph Lermen, who previously worked for Porsche. After helping to optimize the gearing system for the famous car brand, they wanted to investigate whether it could also be applied to bicycles. The goal was to develop a gearing system for bicycles that had a long range and was also maintenance-friendly. The knowledge and experience gained from the automobile industry is well reflected in Pinion's system. The gearing system consists of three shafts with different gears on them that eventually create different transmissions. The Pinion bicycle gear system (6, 9, 12 or 18 speeds) is unique because the gears are incorporated into a closed gearbox at the bottom bracket. The closed system has the advantage of being easy to maintain, durable and provides good weight distribution due to its position near the bottom bracket. The Pinion system is applicable for both chain and belt drive. Juncker Bike Parts is the exclusive distributor of Pinion service parts.

Advantages

The Pinion system can only be used on frames built specifically for it, where the gearbox is placed under the frame at the location of the bottom bracket. With the placement near the bottom bracket, you have the advantage that the center of gravity is at a favorable point of the bike. In the middle of the bike, at a low point and in addition, the rear wheel remains free of much weight. Pinion's front sprocket is a lot smaller than you are used to. Also, the rear sprocket is relatively a lot larger. With these dimensions, you have optimal operation and transmission with minimal risk of skipping because the chain - or the timing belt - always engages enough teeth. The smaller front sprocket also has the advantage that the chain - or toothed belt - and the sprocket are less likely to be damaged by rocks or tree trunks.

All of Pinion's rotating parts are hermetically sealed in an aluminum housing. This prevents you from suffering the effects of water and dirt. With average use, oil replacement is only necessary once a year.

Drive

The Pinion gear system is available in a chain drive version and Gates' belt drive version. Gates' timing belt drive is clean, quiet and extremely durable. The carbon fiber timing belt runs smoothly, hardly wears out and does not need any lubrication. The Gates belt drive is also available exclusively from Juncker Bike Parts.
